Victims of family violence know that an abuser will direct his/her
anger at pets because they are more vulnerable and it is another
method used to control the primary victim. This is a major barrier
for victims to escape the violence. Domestic violence shelters
accept women and children, but they do not accept pets.

The Legacy House Foster Pet Program is committed to supporting the needs of adults, children and their animals who have been affected by violence. The Foster Pet Program provides safe housing for animals while their caregivers establish a non-violent, healthy living environment. The Foster Pet Program consists of volunteer host families who agree to house pets that are appropriately matched with their homes. Host families are screened to ensure their ability to provide a secure and healthy home for the pets and to assess which animal species, personality types and social skills are most appropriate for each home. Click here to download an application to become a volunteer host family for this important program. Applications should be mailed to the attention of Denise Mudd, Legacy House, 2505 N. Arlington Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46218. |
